Twitter is an open forum site that has few rules, but some rules are unwritten and it is important to know how to use the site without abusing it or other users. People on the site refer to it as “Twitterquette”.

Tweeting is a great way to contact others, but it can be abused. Businesses who send a lot of tweets, may want to advise their followers to follow them through an RSS feed, which is an option on Twitter. Flooding your followers with tweets can overload their e-mail and just be plain annoying. They may chose to un-follow you.

Bringing People Together:
The site is intended to bring together people with similar interests or people who find another person’s tweets meaningful. If you are a new user you will not want to automatically follow back everyone who follows you. Don’t be worried about offending the other person and don’t be offended if someone you choose to follow doesn’t chose to follow back with you.

The best advice is to pick ten friends to follow to start out. Then to expand your network, pick one of each of their followers. Chose people who interest you or who you can learn from.

Remember that tweets are not private correspondence and don’t say anything that’s not for publication. Recently a national news story about MS possibly releasing a Zune was picked up on a tweet. If you want to say something that is not for publication to a particular follower, you can chose to private message that person. Make sure they understand that the information is private. Private messages should be similar to phone texts and used in the same way.

Good Business Sense:
Do not market in traditional fashion to your followers; try to make things meaningful to them. The point of this site is to mix some of the personal with the business aspects of your life. Do reciprocate with your followers who re-tweet your messages and do not make it seem like a chore. People want the people they follow to be honest, interesting and unselfish.

Social Sites and Business
It is really important to be honest in your profile and to state your purpose for being on the site. If you work for a traditional company, remember that tweets are public and be sure to include, in your profile, that you do not represent your company on Twitter and that your opinions are your own. It may seem that the Internet is an impersonal forum and that you can retain your anonymity, but on social networking sites the Internet can be very personal and very public.
